Our tiny Pygmy Herd & a New Pyr

Lily the Pygmy
We brought home three more goats Sunday. Many thanks to our friend, Jerri Ritter. She sent us on our way with a pygmy, a mini La Mancha, a mixed doe and a year-old Great Pyrenees.

Chuy, Pygmy Buck

Buck

Stopped by the Escambia County Co-op's Brewton Livestock Auction and saw the cutest little guy! I was the lucky high bidder (considering how high the rest of the goats went today). After we got him home and in the pen, he calmed right down. Has a very sweet little personality. Looking forward to picking up two nannies to keep him company tomorrow from our friend.

Spring? Is that you?

Late January and my Keiffer Pear is blooming. I'm enjoying our mild winter and hope a nasty freeze doesn't come along (like it usually does) and knock the blooms and buds off the trees. Not a peep out of my Pineapple Pear, though. I guess that one's playing it safe. Scattered a couple handfuls of last year's grass seed in the old chicken yard. Hope it will be green soon. No more chickens for us, so I'm hoping I can revert it back to a small pen for goats. Today would be the perfect day to be out working. Not too warm. Not too cool. Stuck inside, recovering and working on bookkeeping. Enjoy your day!!!

A little reminder of Summer

GF No-Bake Cookies

In case I haven't mentioned, my daughter and I are unable to eat food containing gluten. Gluten is in almost everything, often hidden. We've found there are some snacks you just can't find a suitable GF replacement for, so we make our own.

This morning, I was inspired by my friend Gina King and decided to make a batch of No Bake Cookies. You can make these cookies with or without gluten, just use GF Oats. I like Bob's Red Mill brand. They are readily available in our local store.

Here goes!!!

GLUTEN FREE NO BAKE COOKIES
Yield:  approx. 24

Ingredients

  • 2 cups sugar
  • 4 tablespoons cocoa
  • 1 stick butter
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 cup peanut butter
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • Pinch of salt
  • 3 cups GF Oats

    • Directions:
    • In a heavy saucepan bring to a boil, the sugar, cocoa, butter, salt and milk.

Let boil for 1 minute.

Add peanut butter. Stir until thoroughly mixed. Then add vanilla.

Add oatmeal.
Stir until thoroughly mixed. If you are a coconut lover, add a half cup of coconut at this stage.

On a sheet of waxed paper, drop mixture by the tablespoonfuls. Ready to eat when cooled and hardened.

Long Time, No See

We've taken a break from play farming in order to sort out a couple of health issues. We met a wonderful couple who purchased our entire herd of Nubians and gave them a wonderful home in southern Baldwin County, Ala.

In the meantime, the Great Pyrenees puppy we kept, Violet, has grown into a great watch dog. Like mother, like daughter. They still run the fences and keep the deer out of the pasture.

We've been working around the place. Cleaning up. Rearranging.

I think I'd like to try short-term herds. Basically, buy several young bucks in the spring and put them out to pasture, selling them in the fall. Depending how prices are, maybe young does. Birthing babies and all the complications that came with it multiplied by the fact that my husband and I both work 40+ hour a week jobs, 20 miles from home, made it impossible to spend as much time with goats who were kidding or young kids who needed extra attention.

I guess we'll see what the spring brings.

I'll post random things from time to time. Promise not to leave such a large gap in my posts.  :)
